Vol. XXVI, 4th Quarter
October – December 2008
QUICK AND RELIABLE WEATHER RELATED INFORMATION will soon be accessible following the signing of a memorandum of agreement between the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration, and industry leader Smart Communications, Inc. last October 23 at the weather agency’s office in Diliman, Quezon City.
PAGASA came up with Infoboard service through SMART after experiencing typhoon Frank’s extensive devastation. The Infoboard provides advance information or advisories through SMS that enhance the delivery of information especially to the countryside.
The Infoboard is a web-based solution that offers various SMS facilities with different functions and capabilities to meet the needs of the general public.
“With the Infoboard, people can access practically all of PAGASA’s latest bulletins and advisories,” said Dr. Prisco Nilo, PAGASA director.
On the other hand, Smart’s sales and business development head Perry Bayani said that the MOA is a very important step for PAGASA as it looks for different possibilities to mitigate disasters. As the largest telecommunication in the Philippines, SMART has something to contribute in terms of advanced technology solution and as part of its corporate social responsibility.
SMART subscribers that registered for specific types of updates will receive real-time weather updates on their mobile cellular
phones such as on flood, rain, storm, climate, and general advisories from PAGASA.
To register, text ULAN REG Name/Address/Age to 717-ULAN (8526) and to subscribe, text ULAN PUSH ON to the same number. To unsubscribe, text ULAN PUSH OFF. This service costs P1 per text.
The PAGASA keywords are BAHA INFO ADVISORY for flood updates; ULAN INFO ADVISORY or BAGYO INFO ADVISORY for weather updates; KLIMA INFO ADVISORY for climate updates; ASTRO INFO ADVISORY for astronomy updates; and GENERAL INFO PAGASA for general information.
