RP hosts 2nd International Earth Science Olympiad

The Philippines hosts the 2nd  International Earth Science Olympiad starting Sept 1 at the University of the Philippines-National Institute for Science and Mathematics Education Development.

The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, and the International Union of Geological Science declared 2008 as the International Year of the Planet Earth.  “The Philippines ‘ hosting of IESO would be the country’s way of celebrating the IYPE,” he said.

IESO is a competition for secondary school students aged 18 and below considered gifted in Earth Science. During the competition, students will take written and practical tests prepared by an international jury.

The students will also be grouped so that no two students are from the same country and do field investigation in designated sites.

The event’s theme is “Cooptition in Addressing Climate Change”.  “Cooptition” is coined from “cooperation and competition.”

Cano said the theme complements the aims of the Olympiad since the IESO deviates from the traditional content of the highly compartmentalized earth science.

“The IESO is intended to raise students’ interest in and public awareness of earth science, to enhance earth science learning of

students, and to identify talented and gifted students in earth science,” he said.

The IESO would also increase the interest in the Earth Sciences among Filipino students which we hope would entice them to venture into related courses,” Department of Science and Technology-Science Education Institute Director Ester B. Ogena explained.
