Eco-towns to rise in NCR, Region 4, and Camarines Sur

Growing environmental consciousness is shaping community development policy in a few pioneering sites in the country.

The province of Camarines Sur in Bicol region together with Region 4 and National Capital Region will be the country’s pilot Eco-Towns as indicated in a joint project called “Green Framework of Innovative Strategy (GFIS) on Sustainable Consumption and Productivity” between the Department of Science and Technology, Industrial Technology Development Institute, and Japan’s International Center for Environmental Technology Transfer.

The ITDI-GFIS project will establish demonstration eco-towns in the three regions by improving environmental performance of industries and local communities through environmental awareness and implementation of Cleaner Production, Energy Efficiency, and Environmental Management System. Application of these services will reduce and recycle waste as practically as possible.

A meeting late last year among those involved led by ICETT Managing Director Masami Hayakawa and Governor Luis Raymund Villafuerte of Camarines Sur signaled the start of the joint initiative.
