Soya's many health benefits

Living healthy need not be costly. Eating the right kind and amount of foods is one way to do it.

For example, soya and soya-based food products are among the healthiest yet simple foods available. The increasing popularity of soya is mainly attributed to the many health benefits associated with it.

Soya bean has been cultivated and used in different ways for thousands of years. In China, it was considered as one of the holy crops alongside rice, wheat, and barley.

Soya bean is also regarded as a versatile food product because it can be used as whole soya beans, soya sprouts or processed as soya milk, tofu, and miso. Soya's many healthy benefits come mainly from soy proteins like isoflavones genistein and daidzein.

Meanwhile, the Food and Nutrition Research Institute of the Department of Science and Technology developed two food products with soya bean as main ingredient such as soy-peanut spread and soybean gel. Among the benefits that can be derived from these are:

" Very nutritious. Products such as tofu and soya milk are very rich in protein, which is of high quality because it contains all the essential amino acids. The amino acids found in soya combine very well with amino acids found in cereals, which may therefore be very important especially to vegetarians. Soya is also a good source of lecithin and vitamin E. These natural antioxidants prevent oxidation of low density lipoprotein (LDL)
Being healthy starts from a decision to choose the best option for oneself. With all these soya benefits, living healthy is attainable and inexpensive.
