in World Robot Olympiad

THREE FILIPINO ELEMENTARY STUDENTS, underscoring the urgency to stem the declining global environment earned the silver medal in the World Robot Olympiad‘s open category recently in Yokohama, Japan. The silver medal came with a certificate and LEGO trophy. The winning team includes Joseph Aldrin Chua (Grade 6) and Edrich Hans Chua and Dominique Hannah Sy (both Grade 5). Iron fortified rice and veggie noodles

foot bridgeFilipinos may be strange rice and pancit lovers, pairing noodles with rice with much gusto. Now there’s a healthier reason to chug-a-lug rice with pancit. Food experts at the Department of Science and Technology’s Food and Nutrition Research Institute successfully developed rice enriched with iron, and noodles enriched with nutrients from vegetables. These new food technologies could enhance the average Filipino’s usual carbo-loaded diet. According to FNRI’s study, 32% of Filipino women are anemic while 40–50% of the population is iron deficient. 215 students get DOST YES awards

THE DEPARTMENT OF Science and Technology conferred the 2008 Youth Excellence in Science (YES) Award to 215 students. The number of awardees indicates a rising number of Filipino students gaining international recognition. DOST gives the YES medal to students who achieved distinction in international science and mathematics competitions. The second placer with P100,000 cash prize is the Rapid Rice Beer (beer made from rice syrup) which, according to those who tasted it, is more flavorful than sake, the Japanese rice wine. The husband and wife team of Virgilio and Yasmin Malang developed the rice beer.
